La Junta office moving to new location<\/em><\/p>\n

Sept. 22, 2025 (LA JUNTA, Colo.) \u2013 Colorado Legal Services, Colorado\u2019s statewide legal aid nonprofit, opened 954 cases to provide legal aid to low-income Coloradans in August, according to\u00a0its monthly report\u00a0released today.<\/p>\n

The organization serves every county in Colorado through its 12 offices. On Oct. 1, its La Junta office is moving around the corner from its current location to 401 Santa Fe Ave.<\/p>\n

The office, which has a staff of one managing attorney and one paralegal, serves people from Baca, Bent, Cheyenne, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero and Prowers counties. Geoffrey Barta, the managing attorney of the office, has held the position for a year. Aricka Hulsey, the paralegal at the office, has worked at the organization 4 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up in southeastern Colorado, and I am grateful that we are able to have an office here where we can be available to our community,\u201d said Barta. \u201cIt\u2019s vital that our neighbors who need civil legal help have somewhere to turn in southeastern Colorado.\u201d<\/p>\n

Statewide monthly data report<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of those whom CLS opened cases for in August, 436 people (46%) reported they have a disability, 384 (40%) reported being a survivor of domestic violence, 250 (26%) are seniors, and 54 (6%) are veterans. Some people may fall under more than one of these demographic categories.<\/p>\n

The top concerns from Coloradans in August were housing (397), family and safety (210), and consumer (139) matters. Housing matters include defending against evictions, negotiating rent payment agreements with landlords to help people stay in their homes, and helping tenants learn their rights regarding security deposits and conditions impacting the habitability of their homes. Family law matters include representation of domestic violence survivors in divorce, custody, and protection order matters. Consumer law includes things like helping people defend against illegal debt collection, prevent foreclosure, and navigate bankruptcy.<\/p>\n

While not every case that is opened will be closed by the end of the year, opened cases provide a snapshot of the legal issues Coloradans who are living at or below the applicable federal poverty line for free legal aid and seniors are facing.<\/p>\n

Colorado Legal Services is Colorado\u2019s statewide nonprofit legal aid program providing civil legal assistance\u2014which does not include criminal or traffic matters\u2014to low-income individuals and older Coloradans throughout the state. Its 12 offices provide free legal assistance in a broad variety of legal areas, including eviction defense, consumer protection, services to survivors of serious crime, representation for domestic violence survivors, and many others.<\/p>\n
